About OpenTofu

Open-source fork of Terraform under the Linux Foundation, compatible with most Terraform configurations and providers.

OpenTofu is an open-source infrastructure as code tool that started as a fork of Terraform after Terraform's license change. It is run as a Linux Foundation project and uses the same configuration language, so most existing Terraform code and providers work with it.

Teams choose it when they want an open-source license for the core tool, or a community-run roadmap. Moving an existing project is usually a matter of swapping the binary and testing plans, though you should read the migration notes for the versions involved. OpenTofu has no AI features of its own; teams pair it with the coding assistants in this directory and with platforms such as Spacelift or env0 that support it. It adds some features of its own, such as state encryption, so read the release notes when you compare versions.
